LGBT+ people in countries like Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela and El Salvador can hardly lead a normal life just because of who they are.
High levels of LGBTphobia force them to leave their countries looking for a better future. Most of them head north to Mexico or the United States.
However, upon arriving in Mexico, they must face the same levels of discrimination they so desperately wanted to leave behind.
The Casa Frida LGBT+ shelter in Tapachula will be a few kilometers away from the border between Mexico and Guatemala, and it will be a place where LGBT+ people will be welcomed with love and acceptance.
The road to Mexico is full of risks and obstacles. It is common for LGBT+ people to be attacked by criminal gangs and rejected by immigration authorities.
Under such harsh situations, accessing asylum, or even finding a place to sleep, is very difficult.
The Casa Frida shelter in Tapachula* will give LGBT+ migrants a safe place to be treated free of discrimination and respected for who they are.
There, they will have everything they need to continue their journey, whether it is staying in Mexico, or moving on to the United States and Canada.
With your help, hundreds of LGBT+ people will no longer go through so much suffering in their quest for freedom.
*Tapachula is the first town after crossing the border between Mexico and Guatemala.
Casa Frida began as an LGBT+ shelter in Mexico City that opened its doors in 2020 to serve houseless LGBT+ people during the pandemic.
Since then, more than 150 people have passed through its facilities. However, 45% of their cases are from LGBT+ migrants coming from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
Knowing that there are hundreds of LGBT+ people fleeing violence in these places, this shelter would be there to ease their path and welcome them with love.
