Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act criminalizes consensual same-sex acts with life imprisonment, punishes “aggravated homosexuality” by death, bans identifying as LGBT+, and criminalizes promotion of homosexuality with up to 20 years in prison.
In Ghana members of Parliament have re-intoduced an anti-LGBT+ bill that would further criminalize LGBT+ people, advocacy, and allyship. The bill has more political support than ever, and Ghana’s President has vowed to strengthen anti-LGBT+ legislation.
In Kenya, same-sex sexual activity remains criminalized under colonial-era laws with penalties including up to 21 years in prison. A member of Parliament also introduced a draft law called the Family Protection Bill, 2023, seeking to further criminalize LGBT+ people.
